I was remodeling my basement and I understood I needed to call 811 before doing any digging. What I didn't understand is that they only marked the public utilities to their meters. Halfway into our project the contractor hit the well line. It wasn't marked by 811. It halted our project and we were without water while the repair was done. The total cost including repairs expense, cost of idle labor, inconvenience, and proect delays far exceeded the cost of hiring Dig-Doctor. Not to mention the long-term problems that
come from breaking a line and exposing
it to corrosion. With a site survey from
Dig-Doctor I would have known where it
was and we could have had it located. I would have saved myself the expense and the headache of dealing with this problem.

Dig-Doctor was a life-saver. A contractor damaged the main electrical line that services our irrigation pump. 811 had been called but because it was a private line it hadn't been located. A year later the line corroded and shorted out. We couldn't find anyone to find the problem so it could be repaired. We hired an electrician to find it and they were unable to locate it. Dig-Doctor came to the rescue. They found the fault and the line was repaired. When they heard about how the line had been broken they showed us how a site survey could have eliminated those damages. Are we ever glad we did. We never knew how many private lines ran around our home. At the time my husband was preparing to install a clothes line and the proposed site was within 3 ft of the main private gas line that services the house. The damage could have been catastrophic and the repair bill would have been all our responsibility. Any new homeowner owes it to themselves to know where their utilities run so they can avoid the costly repairs that we had to pay.
